The Pentax K-50 16MP Digital SLR Camera is definitely designed for “normal” hands. It has a deep, contoured handgrip on the right-hand side which is coated in a rubberized compound to aid grip that enables user to use three fingers to hold it and right forefinger to operate the shutter button easily. In the body there is a generous contoured area where your right thumb sits perfectly, though disappointingly it’s not covered by the same coating as the front handgrip. Curiously the left-hand side and the remote control port on the right side also include a rubber covering; the rest of the body is finished in a shiny black.
The Pentax K-50 16MP Digital SLR Camera has a shooting mode dial on the top-right side of the camera which allows you to select either one of the advanced mode. As like Aperture-priority, Shutter-Priority or the more point-and-shoot Auto and also Program modes. The camera also features a range of 19 scene modes, signalling its intent as a camera that is equally suited to more casual users. You will instantly notice that the Pentax K-50 16MP Digital SLR Camera has a couple of unusual shooting modes that the user won’t have seen before on any other camera. These modes are Sensitivity-Priority and Shutter & Aperture-Priority modes, and must be mentioned they are genuinely useful.
The rear of the k-50 is dominated by the large 3” LCD screen. The LCD screen has a very high resolution of 920K dots, gives you wide viewing angle and it remains visible outdoors in all but the brightest conditions; this feature makes it one of the better LCD screens that you have seen seen on a DSLR. Colour temperature of the screen can be modified easily if you think it doesn’t match your calibrated computer monitor, you should know that the contrast and gamma cannot be altered. The camera’s rear screen also doubles as a comprehensive status display that can be called up only by pressing the OK or Info buttons in record mode. Then if you press the Info button again, you can change all the settings right on the screen using the combination of the navigation pad and the rear e-dial. This amazing ingenious solution helps to spare you the pain of having to enter the menu as well as making most setting changes very simple.
There are also some notable drawbacks to the K-50’s video mode. It’s a little difficult to actually start recording one. The user have to set the Mode Dial to the Movie mode, then have to press the AF-On or half-press button to set the focus, then simply press the shutter button to begin recording (the same button ending the movie). As with most modern DSLR cameras offer a video mode, user can autofocus during movie recording, though it’s pretty slow and loud to do so with the standard kit lens. It is quite unfortunate that you still can’t set the camera to continually autofocus when shooting a video, which is something that several newer DSLRs can now do.
